Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD)
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ or TMD) also known as TM Joint Dysfunction Syndrome, TM Joint Disorder, Temporomandibular Disorder, Orofacial Pain Syndrome, and Kosten's Syndrome.
Temporomandibular joint disorder involves conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, jaw muscles and nerves on one or both sides of the head that result in jaw, face, head and neck pain.
The pain and discomfort caused by TMJ and TMD disorders may be severe, intermittent or constan t and may last for many years. According the Academy of General Dentistry, TMD and TMJ symptoms may recur during stressful times. Given the current economic climate, social media, and smart phones we are more stressed than ever. Another possible cause for problems with a joint is trauma.
Almost 76% of the population suffers from one or more of the conditions we treat, however most of the conditions go unresolved because most sufferers do not associate their symptoms with dental related issues. These symptoms in turn, may lead to deeper depression and disability. Unfortunately, if any of these symptoms are left unattended, irreversible joint damage may result.
