TMD and Other Medical Procedure Payment Policy
The treatments for TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder), bruxism and OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) are considered medical procedures, and thus are covered by MEDICAL health insurance plans. Medical plans may vary even within the same insurance company. You may contact your insurance using the number for members located on the back of your insurance card to find out what the coverage for TMD treatment for your specific plan is. You may also contact our office and schedule a free consultation appointment, during which we contact your insurance and find out your coverage for the treatment. Please note that as a dental office, we are an out of network provider for Medical insurances, and higher deductible and copayment fees may apply.
Some insurance plans may require a referral from their PCP (primary care physician), and others might require prior authorization. Please call your insurance plan to find out if you require a referral from your PCP by calling the number for members located on the back of your insurance card.
Please note that as a dental office, we are an out of network provider with medical insurance plans. As a courtesy to our patients, we will gladly submit claims for you to your medical insurance company and provide assistance with obtaining reimbursement from them, however, we require an upfront payment for any medical procedure and co-payment on the day of the service as reimbursements for procedures are sent directly to patients instead of our facility.
To determine your coverage for TMD prior to your visit, you can call your Medical Insurance and ask the following questions:
1. Do you cover diagnostic services for TMJ disorder? If so, what is specifically covered? If you are asked for a code, you may provide them with D7880, which stands for an occlusal orthotic guard used for the treatment of TMD, under the diagnosis code of M26.603, as well as multiple office visits for the adjustment of the guards.
2. Is there a lifetime benefit limit on TMJ disorder treatment? If so, what is it? What is included in this limit?
You can always call our office at (617) 734-5516, we will be happy to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
