Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD)

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder involves conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, jaw muscles and nerves on one or both sides of the head that result in jaw, face, head and neck pain. The pain and discomfort caused by TMJ disorders may be severe, can be either intermittent or constant, and may last for many years. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), TMD symptoms may recur during stressful times, whether good or bad.

Almost 75% of the population suffering from one or more of the conditions treated, most of the conditions go unresolved because most sufferers do not associate their symptoms relating to TMD.

Teeth grinding is an especially problematic symptom as it can cause further problems. Bruxism, prolonged teeth grinding, can cause enamel to wear off teeth and expose dentin. This material is softer than enamel and more susceptible to decay. Sensitivity to hot and cold food or drink may also develop from excessive teeth grinding.

Many of the symptoms listed above can often be associated with other health problems, so only a medical professional can tell you if they are due to TMD.
